Hi, this is Mitra from Foreverbird Studio, doing another guest post on my experiences using VoteUp.
In the late summer thousands of people, including my family, pack their bags and travel, ‘home’. This place we call home is known to the rest of the world as Burning Man. The trip planning involved in going home to Burning Man can be overwhelming. This year we used the VoteUp app like a mobile trip planner to help make better decisions.
Road trip planning has been a staple activity in my family since I was a little girl. Together we have traveled all over the US and visited nearly all 50 states. Entertainment options were limited when I was a kid. While traveling we entertained ourselves with singing, talking, and observing the landscape. Our destinations included camping in national parks and visiting relatives. It’s not a surprise that later on our family ended up being called home to Burning Man.
Burning Man is an annual event and year-round culture. The event takes place the week leading up to and including Labor Day, in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. The Burning Man organization (Black Rock City LLC) creates the infrastructure of Black Rock City, wherein attendees (or "participants") dedicate themselves to the spirit of community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. They depart one week later, leaving no trace. As simple as this may seem, trying to explain what Burning Man is to someone who has never been to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind. In this section you will find the peripheral definitions of what the event is as a whole, but to truly understand this event, one must participate.
Deciding on what entertainment to bring to Burning Man is a long process in our family. There are so many great ideas to consider and normally we decide on more than just one. Each year more and more people bring amazing creative projects to the desert. Believe it or not there is a group that actually builds a little movie theatre out in the desert.
This year one of our creative projects is to create a movie experience in our camp. We used the VoteUp app to poll our family on what movies to show. My mom, Holly, created the poll using VoteUp and then text messaged 23 of us to find out what movie was the most popular in the group.
Using the VoteUp App was an easy way to connect with our family quickly and see what how the group felt about the movie options. The top choices are not too surprising. The movies everyone wants to see blend technology and adventure in a way that is similar to the experience of being at Burning Man.
It’s wonderful how mobile productivity apps, like VoteUp, allow our family to stay connected even over great distances. With a push of a couple buttons we are all connected. If you have not yet tried using VoteUp then deciding a movie to see with your family might be a good place to start.
